Contributing 55% of the Western Cape population and 9% of the population nationally, the Coloured segment is a prime and valuable market for companies and brands. It is a dynamic and growing market of immense economic potential.


Ethnographic research conducted by OIL Insight in 2009 showed that coloured people differ in terms of mindset, attitudes, lifestyle, dialects, religions and location. Four distinct groups emerged, defined by the names originating from the Cape coloured community and that are still part of everyday language.


As the demographics show the segments reflect the transformation from the historical image – ‘The Escapers’ through to ‘The Silver Spooners’ who reflect the young ‘Born Free’ society.
